THE COURIER and The Courier Commercial Printing
The Findlay Publishing Company story begins with The Courier.
The Courier, now
over 158 years old and Findlay’s oldest surviving business, has been
in continuous existence since Jacob Rosenberg published the first
edition of THE FINDLAY COURIER on November 10, 1836.
Although THE FINDLAY COURIER was the area’s first newspaper,
it faced stiff competition from other local papers for almost 100
years.
One such newspaper
was THE REPUBLICAN, which was owned by The Findlay Publishing Company
and began daily publication in 1886.
Surviving competition from the other newspapers that came and
went, THE REPUBLICAN and The Courier
came under common ownership when
The Findlay Publishing Company purchased The Courier
in 1926.
Like many other American newspapers of that time, THE
REPUBLICAN and The Courier
were unabashed partisans for political
points of view.
Both
newspapers maintained their party affiliation even though they were
owned by the same company and printed in the same plant.
THE MORNING REPUBLICAN was the morning Republican
newspaper; THE FINDLAY COURIER was an evening Democratic party
newspaper.
However, the
two papers were later nudged toward professionalism by the economic
conditions of the Great Depression.
In 1933, the two were combined into a single daily, published
in the morning and independent in politics, and the name was changed
to THE REPUBLICAN-COURIER.
The Heminger family entered the newspaper business in
1886 when I. N. Heminger joined the staff of THE REPUBLICAN.
Fifteen years later, after building a stock interest and
serving as a director, he became business manager of the publication.
His two sons, R. L. and L. N. Heminger joined the newspaper staff
upon completion of school. L. N.
Heminger died in an auto accident in 1931, but R. L. Heminger went on
to succeed his father as head of the Company in 1941.
The two sons of R. L. Heminger were actively
associated with the Company until Harold H. Heminger retired in June,
1983.
Harold had
succeeded his father as President of The Findlay Publishing Company in
1965 and was instrumental in the growth and management of the
Company’s radio operations.
Edwin
L. Heminger had served as President of the Company until April 1989,
when he was named Chairman of The Board of Directors. Edwin had also
served as Publisher until April 2000.
Kurt P. Kah is the current President of The Findlay Publishing
Company, having been named to that position in April 1989.
He also serves as the Treasurer of the Company. One of
Edwin’s sons, Karl L. Heminger was named Publisher in April 2000.
The Republican-Courier name was shortened to The Courier
in 1976 to emphasize the newspaper’s independence from
political bias.
Currently, The Courier’s circulation is over 25,000 in the area surrounding
Findlay and Hancock County and remains one of few morning daily
newspapers in northwestern Ohio.
The Courier building was erected in 1967 and expanded in 1973
and 1986 to house the corporate offices of The Findlay Publishing

and Allegra Print and Imaging.

REVIEW TIMES
The FOSTORIA REVIEW can be traced
back to 1893.
In 1897the
FOSTORIA REVIEW merged another local newspaper, the FOSTORIA DISPATCH
to create the DAILY REVIEW.
Fostoria
had as many as six newspapers, including the DAILY REVIEW, the
FOSTORIA REVIEW, the FOSTORIA DEMOCRAT,
the FOSTORIA TIMES, FOSTORIA WEEKLY DISPATCH and the FOSTORIA
DAILY DISPATCH.
After
many consolidations, a final merger happened in 1943 when the DAILY
REVIEW and the DAILY TIMES combined to become the Review
Times.
The Findlay Publishing Company purchased the Review
Times on
February 1, 1999.
The Blanchard River Broadcasting Company
d.b.a. WFIN/ WKXA
WFIN
began broadcasting on December 15, 1941.
It was the first station to serve all of Northwest Ohio and
remained the only area station for many years.
FM facilities were added in 1948.
Following the death of the principal owner, the stations were
purchased by The Findlay Publishing Company in 1949.
WFIN
is licensed to broadcast 1,000 watts of power at
1330 KHz, daytime, and reduced power at night, having gone to 24-hour
broadcasting in August, 1989.
The
station supplies its listeners with extensive local and regional,
award-winning news and sports.
In
1987 WFIN began broadcasting in AM stereo.
The FM facility was also a forerunner in Northwest
Ohio as it was the first in the area to offer completely separate
programming and first to broadcast in multiplex stereo.
The WFIN-FM call letters were changed to WHMQ in 1975.
In 1985, a major renovation occurred when the tower and
transmitting facilities were moved south of Houcktown, enabling WHMQ
to increase its coverage area.
In
June of 1989, the call letters were changed to WKXA
to enable the
station format and identity to be redirected. WKXA
is licensed to broadcast 20,000 watts of power at 100.5
MHz. In January 1991, WFIN and
WKXA
were incorporated as The Blanchard
River Broadcasting Company.
a
wholly owned subsidiary company of The Findlay Publishing Company.
In August of 1992, the stations moved into their new quarters
in the Cascade Cliffs Center, an ultramodern broadcasting and office
condominium complex, shard with two other tenants, The National Lime
and Stone Company, and Pry CPA Services, Inc.

The White River Broadcasting Company
d.b.a. WCSI/ WKKG/ WINN, and WRBI
WCSI
began broadcasting in 1947 as an FM station.
It was the most powerful in Indiana and one of the most
powerful in the nation, at that time.
Two years later the transmitting tower blew down in a severe
windstorm.
Upon resuming
operations following the storm, WCSI
abandoned the FM frequency in
favor of AM and was licensed at 1010 KHz with 500 watts of power.
The
Findlay Publishing Company purchased WCSI
in 1957 and formed the White
River Broadcasting Company Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary,
incorporated in Indiana. WCSI
currently supplies award-winning news and local and regional sports to
its audience, along with its musical format. In 1987, WCSI
began broadcasting in stereo.
In 1958, White River Broadcasting Company applied for
a FM permit and began operating WCSI-FM at 101.5 MHz. Eventually, the
station’s power was increased to 20,000 watts and is licensed and
operating at 50,000 watts, today.
The
FM station was one of the first Indiana stations to broadcast in
multiplex stereo. In 1983, the WCSI-FM call letters were changed to WKKG.
In 1987, WKKG
replaced its transmitting facilities,
increased the tower height and increased the power to 50,000 watts.
